The phosphor coating in a fluorescent lamp is a critical component in the lamp’s operation. The arc in the lamp causes electrons to strike mercury atoms, raising their electrons to a higher energy state. When the electrons drop back down to a lower energy state, the radiation is emitted. The most radiation occurs at 254 nm, well into the short wave, energetic, Ultraviolet range. The UV radiation is absorbed by the phosphor and is re-emitted as visible light.
Phosphor for fluorescent lamps has been tuned to be efficient at absorbing this 254 nm UV and to produce visible light. There are many types of phosphor, some that emit broadly and some that emit in specific colors. The latter types are then combined, such as in an in RGB blend to create white light; but in either case, the phosphor is a critical component to create usable white light for the human visual system.
